Adam home school

Home schooling continues to be going good at our home. And the doubts that I had (yes, I questioned if we were doing the right thing for him, for me, for us) disappear more and more each day. Adam is a happier boy, not to say he was unhappy before but school did stress him and you could see it and the relief of Fridays, and the sadness of Sundays when he knew he had to go the next morning are now over. He actually had a huge smile on his face tonight when we said you have school tomorrow. Another positive is the great feeling we get when he learns something new and we are part of it. When he was little we had a LOT of those moments, but once he started school full time we kinda laid off the teaching some what. He would come home exhausted and we wanted him to have "down time". We would still work on spelling words (the years he had them) and reading at night but that's really about it. And I forgot how great it is to be a part of that "ahaaa moment" and the feeling of accomplishment, and yes, this is what I'm here for, this is exactly what God wants me to be doing. We had one of those moments this week. Let me share it with you.

Adam learned how to "skip count" by 5's and 10's by the end of first grade. He never "got" counting by 2's, just for some reason didn't "get it". This school year sadly he lost counting by 5's and 10's you know the saying if you don't use it you lose it, well, totally true in this case. Luckily though it came back easily. We started to tackle skip counting by 2's. Adam would say "this is to HARD!!!" "I can't do it" "Ugggg I hate counting by 2's" I started to think he just might not ever be able to count by 2's and that's okay. But, I didn't stop because I also knew he was a little smarty :) and you know what, it clicked this week. You actually could see it just "click" and my boy is skip counting by 2's pro!!! Loves getting the craft sticks out (aka Popsicle sticks) and can count by 2's like he's been doing it for years :) I got to see this, I got to be a part of this, I got to be the one to hug him tight and tell him how proud I was of him. Of course, I had to remind him of all his "It's to hard for me, I can't, I don't want to blah blah blah". He smiled when I was reminding him of this and just said "yea, I can do it". I told him to not forget that! Yes, things will be hard, but don't give up, because you can do it!!!!! I'm just sayin' this is so worth it!!!

I just stumbled upon your blog! I've homeschooled for 5 years, my youngest has DS. Thank-you so much for writing about this. I am really struggling with how to meet my children's educational needs. (Just sent the oldest to public school) I want to homeschool my youngest, but I'm not getting the support from people that I've gotten for hs'ing my other kids.

BTW, I think the sideways peace sign is so cool.
